Dr Ziggy Switkowski, recently appointed Chancellor of RMIT University takes up his post in January, 2011. He has a distinguished career in science, telecommunications, the arts and business and talks to us on some of the issues with which he deals in his various capacities. He took his PhD in nuclear physics at the University of Melbourne, going on to complete six years of postdoctoral research, qualifications that led to his appointment in 2007 as Chairman of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). He is also chairman of Opera Australia, a director of Suncorp and of Tabcorp. Earlier in his career he was chief executive of Telstra. Prior to that he had been chairman and managing director of Kodak Australasia, and chief executive of Optus.
In this interview he discusses Australia's future energy needs and forecasts the use of nuclear power along with development of wind and solar power generation. He also looks at Australia's future needs in education and the demands likely to be made on talent in future decades when mineral resources will begin to decline.
